Provenance and Species Selection
It is really important that we are not only planting Australian Native Plants in our outdoor spaces, but are actually selecting plants that are native to the ecological community of which we coexist with. We need to plant the plants that were here.
When you allow the return of plants back to the soils they evolved in, you are giving Nature the nod of respect, as if to say welcome back, be abundant again, blossom, may all benefit from this space.
The classic colonial concoction of regularly maintained lawns, concrete courtyards, tightly pruned hedges and exotic trees and succulents are all horrible hosts to our native insects and wildlife, and these gardens are still the dominant kind across the Eastern Suburbs! Having an aesthetic outdoor space that acts as a haven for you and native fauna is simply the right thing to do - we are seeing more people do it and we need to keep on doing it until the dividing line between Nature and suburbia is erased.
